AIUT has opened an AMR robotics laboratory at the Silesian University of Technology
They don't need an operator or a driver. They independently deliver goods and safely transport people. Furthermore, they move seamlessly in dynamic factory environments as well as on city streets. These autonomous vehicles, as they are referred to, are becoming a key solution in the automation of internal transport. What’s more, their potential is also growing in complementing public transportation. The Silesian University of Technology will learn how to design and build such state-of-the-art solutions. On December 15, a new Laboratory of Autonomous Mobile Robots was opened at the Faculty of Mechanical Technology. The project is being carried out in collaboration with AIUT.
Students of the Silesian University of Technology will benefit from the new Laboratory of Autonomous Mobile Robots, which was designed and provided with equipment and autonomous robots by AIUT. The new educational space will allow future engineers to enhance their skills in designing and constructing the vehicles used, among other things, in the process of material delivery in production halls and warehouses. Specifically, we're talking about vehicles in the AMR class (Autonomous Mobile Robots), AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles), and the systems that enable their use.
– One of the main tasks of our university is to set the directions of technological progress. The opening of the new laboratory, where autonomous vehicles will be designed, is another important step on this path and a confirmation of our real collaboration with the industrial environment. Our goal is to prepare students in the best possible way for working with new technologies. The laboratory will provide access to advanced solutions and robots that are used in industry and logistics. Students will gain knowledge and experience that will contribute to the workforce shaping the future of the industry, said Prof. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice-Rector for General Affairs.
The newly opened laboratory is located at the Faculty of Mechanical Technology, in the building of the Center for New Technologies at the Silesian University of Technology. As emphasized by the university authorities, students from various faculties and fields of study will be able to use it.
– It is important for technological companies, such as ours, to support the competency development of future professionals and prepare engineers for the challenges faced by the industry. It is a privilege to introduce students to new technologies in the field of mobile robotics. This is a rapidly evolving field, and the market will need experienced specialists in this area. Therefore, as a designer and manufacturer of modern intralogistics systems and autonomous mobile robots, we are fully committed to this project – said Marek Gabryś, President of AIUT.
Autonomous Driving: mobile robots for learning and testing
In the new laboratory, students will have the opportunity to build an autonomous robot from scratch and test it for the first time. They will acquire skills in designing and constructing modern vehicles, as well as building entire intralogistic systems based on robotic transport. The groups have access to six professional training stations equipped with the necessary hardware and software licenses. Among them are stations for learning and researching drive techniques used in mobile robotics, modern communication techniques, natural navigation systems, and safety systems. The laboratory also features a testing area with autonomous mobile robots in the AMR class (Autonomous Mobile Robots), including the AIUT Formica series.
– It is not the first time that the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Technology has become a forerunner in the development of new technologies. This time, it concerns autonomous systems. Considering our current projects implemented across multiple faculties, it can be said that autonomous systems are becoming a very visible direction of research and applications at the Silesian University of Technology. We already have teams of scientists responsible for the development of autonomous technologies and solutions. These solutions will eventually find applications in industry as well as urban spaces. Examples include AMR robots currently used for material transport in production halls or the recently introduced autonomous minibus that has recently been running around campus. With the new laboratory, the potential for the development of this area becomes even greater, considering both the research and educational aspects – emphasized Dr. Eng. Anna Timofiejczuk, Ph.D., professor of Silesian University of Technology, dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Technology.
Thanks to the cooperation between the Silesian University of Technology and AIUT, the university has gained not only a modern and student-friendly teaching space but also a partner in the educational, research, and human resources areas.
– The mobile robotics market is rapidly growing and experiencing a significant leap. It's an excellent time to develop the skills of young professionals in designing robotic transport systems, fleet management systems for mobile robots, and constructing autonomous vehicles. The laboratory also includes a station for learning and researching techniques for analyzing process data. Data analysis is currently one of the key stages allowing the assessment of the effectiveness of industrial solutions – noted Dr. Eng. Marek Drewniak, Head of the Research and Development Section in the Automation Department at AIUT, coordinating the laboratory opening project.
Students of the Silesian University of Technology also have the opportunity to undergo internships and join a paid program at AIUT in Gliwice.

Silesian University of Technology develops education and research for Industry 4.0
The Laboratory of Autonomous Mobile Robots is the latest addition, following initiatives such as the Center for Testing Industry 4.0 Technologies and educational laboratories for 5G technology. It was established by the Silesian University of Technology as part of Priority Research Areas, including POB5: Process Automation and Industry 4.0. These efforts aim to enhance competencies and implement new technologies in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
